Russian sources say RPG-armed Ukrainian ground robots were repelled

Russian accounts say Ukrainian forces sent as many as 28 ground drones into an assault without putting soldiers directly into the fighting. The reported attack, involving robots armed with RPGs and grenade launchers, appears to have failed, though details so far come only from Russian sources.

Ukraine’s 3rd Army Corps, commanded by Andriy Biletsky, launched the attack using dozens of robots, according to the account. The corps had previously used unconventional drone tactics in its Vivaldi operation near Lyman, including heavy aircraft to carry armed ground drones deep behind Russian lines.

The Russian Telegram channel Military Informant counted two drones fitted with US-made Mk 19 grenade launchers, 18 carrying two RPGs each and eight explosive-loaded kamikaze drones. The channel said no Ukrainian soldiers took part directly in combat during the assault. The account’s claims have not been independently confirmed, and further information may emerge. Based on what is currently available, the attempt appears to have been unsuccessful.

The episode illustrates how a Ukrainian formation facing a shortage of manpower is using technology to limit risks to its personnel and preserve scarce resources. The source article also presents ground drones as one possible way to help move fighting away from static front lines and toward more mobile warfare.
