Czech public broadcasters strike over funding independence

“An unprecedented day in the history of Czech public service media has begun,” declared news chief Michal Kubal as broadcasting workers launched a nationwide strike on 3 November 2026. The walkout, centered in Prague, Brno, and Ostrava, challenges government plans to scrap license fees in favor of direct state budget funding.

The protest, organized by the Veřejnoprávně initiative, saw staff from Czech Television and Czech Radio walk off the job to guard editorial independence. By midnight, viewers were met with darkened studios and condensed, minimalist news bulletins. Management confirmed a memorandum ensuring essential coverage remains active only if extraordinary national developments occur.

Thousands of citizens, including students, theatrical groups, and over 300 athletes, joined demonstrations in city squares to support the media workers. A recent STEM/MARK survey underscores the public sentiment, revealing that 68 percent of Czechs oppose moving media oversight toward state or private control. Presenter Daniel Stach emphasized that the current disruption is a necessary stand to preserve the standard of public service broadcasting against future political encroachment.
