Firefighters Converge on Brussels to Oppose EU Disaster Budget Cuts

Thousands of firefighters from 19 nations flooded Brussels on Tuesday, demanding increased staffing and specialized healthcare ahead of critical EU budget talks. The demonstration directly challenged a proposed reduction in disaster management funding, which critics argue ignores the escalating intensity of climate-driven wildfires across the continent.

The European Federation of Public Service Unions organized the protest outside an EU Commission conference on civil protection. While Commissioner Hadja Lahbib outlined emergency preparedness guidelines for citizens, responders focused on the structural neglect of their own ranks. Budget proposals currently sit at just under €7bn, a significant retreat from the €10bn requested by the Commission to combat a crisis that inflicts approximately €2.5bn in annual losses.

Data from October reveals that 692,419 hectares have burned across the EU this year, releasing 30 million tonnes of CO2. Southern member states, including Portugal and Greece, remain the hardest hit by a 57 percent increase in wildfire frequency since 2022. For those on the front lines, the shortfall manifests in chronic understaffing. Stalo Yostili, a Cypriot firefighter, noted that operations frequently proceed with less than half the required personnel, drastically elevating individual risk. Beyond immediate hardware needs, unions are pushing for specialized medical support to address the rising prevalence of PTSD and occupational cancers among veterans of the service.
