The AfD and BSW alignment in Saxony-Anhalt

With 48 votes securing the regional parliament presidency for Tobias Rausch, the Alternative für Deutschland has moved closer to power in Saxony-Anhalt. The victory, bolstered by support from Sahra Wagenknecht’s BSW, signals a potential shift in regional governance that could reshape policy on migration, security, and the war in Ukraine.

The AfD and BSW alignment in Saxony-Anhalt

The election of Rausch as the first AfD landtag president marks a significant shift in German state politics. While the position itself holds limited executive authority, the cooperation between the AfD and the BSW to secure his appointment suggests a burgeoning legislative alliance. The two parties recently demonstrated this alignment by passing a non-binding resolution that calls for an end to financial support for Kyiv and urges Ukrainian capitulation to Russia.

Negotiations for a formal governing coalition remain fluid, with the selection of a regional prime minister expected as early as December. Even without a formal cabinet position for the AfD candidate Ulrich Siegmund, a persistent voting bloc between the AfD and BSW could effectively paralyze regional policy. German states wield substantial influence over education, policing, and media, meaning a coordinated far-right and populist front in the regional parliament would have tangible consequences for local governance and national legislative representation in the Bundesrat.
