Kyiv Vulnerable as Russian Ballistic Missiles Breach Air Defenses

The overnight assault utilized 24 Iskander-M and S-400 ballistic missiles alongside four Zircon anti-ship missiles, none of which were intercepted. NASA’s FIRMS monitoring confirmed widespread damage across industrial and civilian sectors, resulting in at least 17 deaths and 44 injuries. While Ukrainian forces downed 98 of 115 Shahed drones, the inability to counter ballistic threats highlights a dangerous tactical imbalance. Since July, an estimated 150 ballistic missiles have been fired at the region, with only seven intercepted, underscoring the limitations of the current Patriot-reliant defense.

Military analysts and former defense advisers suggest that the only viable path to mitigate these attacks is shifting focus toward destroying Russian launch systems before they fire. Currently, these launchers operate 200 to 250 kilometers from the border, often retreating before Ukrainian aircraft can respond. Expert Kostiantyn Kryvolap noted that while the window to strike is narrow, domestic development of long-range ballistic missiles like the FP-7 could eventually provide a solution. However, with those systems still in development, the discussion has turned toward more immediate, sensitive alternatives, including requests for expanded technical support that would require high-level Western authorization, including from Elon Musk regarding Starlink infrastructure usage.
