Lawyers sueing Frontex barred from Brussels human rights event

Iftach Cohen, a lawyer for the civil society group Front-lex, says his team was blocked from speaking at a closed-door Brussels meeting titled “Saving Lives at Sea.” The session, scheduled for June 25, is jointly hosted by the EU border agency Frontex and the UN human rights office.

The exclusion follows a series of legal battles between the Dutch-based organization and the Warsaw-based agency. Front-lex is currently litigating against Frontex in Luxembourg, alleging the border police facilitated the interception and return of migrants by the Libyan coast guard. Tensions escalated after a December court ruling granted the lawyers a rare victory, forcing the agency to disclose exclusive data rather than claiming ignorance of its operations. Cohen noted that the UN high commissioner expressed discomfort regarding the exclusion, yet the agency ultimately prevented their participation in the upcoming discussion.
