Hungary Dismantles Fidesz Media Empire

The newly installed Tisza government has launched a legislative assault on the state media apparatus, filing a bill to dissolve the existing structure and replace it with an independent oversight board. This overhaul aims to dismantle the primary communication vehicle used by former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to consolidate power.

The proposed legislation mandates the immediate termination of current leadership mandates, replacing the centralized system with an Independent Public Media Board. This new body will feature an equal split of parliamentary and professional representatives, explicitly barring anyone who held a party-political role in the last five years. Zoltán Tarr, the minister for social affairs and culture, described the move as a return of state broadcasting to the Hungarian people.

Financial instability is simultaneously accelerating the collapse of the broader Fidesz-aligned media ecosystem. Mediaworks, the holding company under the Central European Press and Media Foundation, reported a 14 billion forint loss for 2025. With state advertising revenues severed, mass layoffs are underway at outlets that previously functioned as propaganda instruments. An audit of the former administration's media spending is ongoing, with management competitions expected to begin this autumn.
