How Cold Emailing Secured a Job After a Layoff

Seven months after graduating from UC Berkeley, a routine growth meeting at a hospitality PR firm turned into a sudden layoff. Faced with a shrinking job market and the prospect of draining savings in San Francisco, the author abandoned traditional job boards to pursue a more direct strategy.

How Cold Emailing Secured a Job After a Layoff

The search began by mapping specific Bay Area hotels and hospitality groups, creating a curated list of targets rather than casting a wide net on automated portals. The strategy relied on cold emailing: crafting concise, personalized messages that highlighted specific admiration for a company’s reputation or service quality. Each email followed a simple formula—stating interest, offering a brief background on internship experience, and requesting a conversation about potential roles regardless of whether a position was officially posted.

Methodical outreach, averaging three to four emails daily, yielded results within 48 hours. A director at a contacted hotel responded, leading to an interview for a marketing role. Although that specific position was unavailable, the conversation pivoted to a catering opening suited to the author's event planning background. Three weeks after the initial outreach, the author accepted the role, proving that direct, bold communication can bypass the limitations of standard application processes.
