EU Commission trims 2027 agenda to prioritize industrial competitiveness

The European Commission unveiled a lean 2027 work program on Wednesday, narrowing its focus to just 23 policy initiatives. By prioritizing energy price reduction and industrial simplification, Brussels aims to curb red tape while balancing urgent military readiness concerns against a backdrop of increasing geopolitical volatility and supply chain dependencies.

The new roadmap pivots away from complex regulatory expansion, favoring a streamlined approach to housing and energy. A centerpiece of this effort is a clean heat market mechanism, designed to incentivize heat pump deployment and insulate households from volatile fossil fuel markets. Complementing this, a housing simplification package aims to strip away administrative barriers for construction and renovation projects.

Industrial autonomy remains a critical concern, with the Commission planning to launch a European Corporation on Critical Raw Materials to decouple supply chains from Chinese influence. Simultaneously, the agenda signals a shift toward collective security. Officials warn that the bloc’s 2030 military readiness goals are currently at risk, prompting the Commission to explore the creation of a European Security Council to better coordinate defense strategies with key allies against persistent hybrid threats.
