Proton CTO's blunt AI manifesto divides software engineering ranks

“Your job is no longer to write code,” Proton CTO Bart Butler declared in a viral internal memo that has ignited a fierce debate across the tech industry. By framing engineers as team leaders for LLMs rather than individual contributors, Butler has forced a confrontation over the profession's evolving identity.

The document, which surfaced via 404 Media, argues that artificial intelligence has fundamentally altered the core function of software development. Rather than viewing tools as mere productivity boosters, the manifesto asserts that engineers must pivot toward guiding models to generate superior output. While Proton acknowledged that its internal communication style has occasionally been perceived as blunt, the memo resonated deeply with prominent industry voices who believe the traditional coding role is nearing obsolescence.

OpenAI’s Peter Steinberger and Ruby on Rails creator David Heinemeier Hansson have both publicly endorsed the sentiment, warning that those clinging to the idea of human-only code reviews are ignoring a shift in reality. SpaceX principal engineer Lauren Tan echoed this stance, noting that the period for mourning the loss of manual coding is over. For many, the memo represents a threshold: a shift from individual craft to the management of an elastic, AI-driven workforce. As Plover Labs cofounder Edward Ahn observed, executive memos regarding AI are becoming increasingly candid, signaling that the industry’s patience for traditional development workflows is wearing thin.
