Danish artist turns Trump into gold-plated 'Orange Plague' in Strasbourg

A 2.5-metre-high statue of a naked, obese Donald Trump gilded in 23-carat gold now looms over the European Parliament in Strasbourg. While creator Jens Galschiøt intends the grotesque installation to strip the former president of his perceived power through ridicule, the piece has ignited a sharp diplomatic backlash.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico led the charge against the sculpture, labeling it a symbol of a decaying European Union and demanding its immediate removal. Fico, who maintains close ties with the American politician, slammed the Parliament’s leadership as spiritually bankrupt, arguing that the display insults international partners during a period that demands mutual respect rather than mockery.

Artist Jens Galschiøt, however, maintains that the work serves as a necessary warning against the erosion of democracy and environmental standards. Drawing inspiration from Hans Christian Andersen’s The Emperor’s New Clothes, Galschiøt depicts Trump as a delusional figure unaware of his own absurdity. The sculpture features a second, slender figure supporting the massive, gilded weight of the former president, serving as a biting commentary on hypocrisy. For Galschiøt, the goal is simple: by exposing the ridiculous nature of the figure, the audience can reclaim the power typically ceded to autocrats.
