OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar on AI Automation and Workforce Shifts

OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar says the company is leveraging its own AI tools to automate internal finance operations, specifically targeting repetitive tasks. While acknowledging the technology reduces headcount requirements for certain roles, Friar argued these positions often involve mundane labor that is better suited for high-accuracy algorithmic processing.

During a recent appearance on CNBC, Friar illustrated the shift by highlighting the company’s procurement department. Last year, the team performed 2,800 manual credit checks. By deploying an intelligent model to handle this workload, OpenAI reduced the cost per check from $200 to just 17 cents. Friar noted that removing these rote responsibilities allows human employees to focus on more complex, high-value work where human intelligence is essential.

This perspective contrasts with more dire predictions circulating in the tech industry. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently suggested that AI could eventually eliminate half of all entry-level white-collar roles, a forecast endorsed by AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton. While Hinton cautioned that the technology is advancing rapidly, Friar remains focused on the immediate productivity gains and the potential for AI to elevate the nature of human labor by handling low-level administrative burdens.
