Gerry Tsoukalas and Brett Falk, authors of the research paper "The AI Layoff Trap," argue that firms face a classic economic dilemma. While a single company might recognize that mass layoffs cripple local markets, the competitive landscape forces a "dominating strategy" where failure to automate invites defeat by rivals. The result is a race to the bottom, where individual rational decisions lead to a collective economic collapse.
Reliance on corporate restraint is a failed strategy, according to Tsoukalas. He suggests that policymakers must intervene, perhaps through taxes on firms that replace humans with AI or subsidies for those that prioritize retention. This shift is critical as global institutions sound the alarm on the pace of disruption. A recent World Economic Forum report suggests that 120 million workers face mid-term redundancy, noting that traditional reskilling programs are already failing to keep up. The study posits that the global workforce needs to move beyond the concept of "jobs" entirely, focusing instead on the structural choice between an economy that deploys humans and one that sustains them.
