Fed Chair Warsh Recruits Outsiders for Sweeping Policy Review

Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh has assembled a diverse coalition of economists and former central bankers to lead five task forces investigating the bank’s operations. These panels, ranging from balance sheet management to the economic impact of artificial intelligence, aim to modernize the institution’s analytical tools and policy approaches.

Fed Chair Warsh Recruits Outsiders for Sweeping Policy Review

The Fed announced the leadership of these groups on Thursday, signaling a push for independent, evidence-based feedback for the Federal Open Market Committee. The roster reflects a broad intellectual spectrum, intentionally pulling expertise from outside the traditional central banking echo chamber. Harvard professor Raj Chetty, known for his work with real-time household data, will spearhead the panel on data analytics. Tech venture capitalist Marc Andreessen joins as a co-lead for the productivity and jobs task force, while Greg Mankiw, former chair of the Council of Economic Advisers under George W. Bush, takes the helm on inflation.

Warsh, who first floated the review during his inaugural policy meeting in mid-June, maintains that the U.S. economy has undergone a fundamental transformation that demands a reassessment of existing policy methods. By bringing in figures who operate outside the Fed's day-to-day orbit, the chairman seeks to ensure the central bank remains functional during a volatile period of technological and structural change.
