The tension escalated when the France captain warned that the country faced a critical juncture if political extremists gained power. While National Rally spokesperson Julien Odoul mocked the player for his perceived privilege, others, including conservative journalist Geoffroy Lejeune, suggested that Mbappé’s activism disrupted team chemistry. Despite these pressures, coach Didier Deschamps defended the player’s right to freedom of expression, a stance echoed by various public figures.
This confrontation is not new. Two years ago, Mbappé encouraged young voters to reject extremism, a sentiment that resonated with over two hundred French athletes who later signed an open letter echoing his concerns. Although the National Rally saw initial success in recent parliamentary elections, they ultimately finished behind the left-wing coalition and President Macron’s centrist bloc. The French two-round electoral system, which often facilitates a broad coalition against the far-right, remains a significant hurdle for the party’s ambitions.
