From Six Figures to the Restaurant Floor: A Designer’s Job Hunt

Steven Lowe reached a career milestone in early 2024, landing a high-paying art director role at StubHub that finally brought financial security. The victory was short-lived. Just months later, a sudden layoff forced the 41-year-old Brooklyn resident back into a grueling, unpredictable job market that has left many professionals reeling.

Lowe’s experience mirrors a broader trend across the US, where hiring rates have hit their lowest levels since 2013. As economic uncertainty and corporate restructuring persist, more than a quarter of the unemployed have been searching for work for at least 27 weeks. For Lowe, the transition from a stable salary to the uncertainty of unemployment meant trading his creative career for a host position at Rosemary’s in Manhattan’s West Village.

He secured the restaurant role in just three days, a stark contrast to the weeks of silence following corporate job applications. While the $22-an-hour gig provided a necessary lifeline, it barely covered his expenses. By May, Lowe pivoted again, accepting an administrative assistant role that offered more consistent hours but came with a significant pay cut—roughly 60% to 70% less than his previous salary at StubHub. Though he remains committed to returning to art direction, he views his current position as a necessary stopgap in a landscape where traditional career paths have become increasingly fragile.
