FIDE ousts Russian Chess Federation amid looming EU sanctions

The International Chess Federation suspended the Russian Chess Federation this week, bowing to mounting pressure after months of hesitation. The move arrived abruptly following reports that European Union officials were preparing to add FIDE president Arkady Dvorkovich to a sanctions list for his ties to the war in Ukraine.

The Swiss-based governing body ignored an April ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which mandated a three-year suspension by June 9. Despite the deadline passing, FIDE leadership initially planned to postpone formal discussions until June 17. The stance shifted only after news broke of potential personal sanctions against Dvorkovich.

According to Greek chess master George Mastrokoukos, the threat of financial and travel restrictions triggered an emergency WhatsApp meeting among officials. The swift decision to comply with the tribunal's order followed that internal panic. Volodymyr Kovalchuk, president of the Ukrainian Chess Federation, echoed the assessment that the federation acted out of fear of EU repercussions rather than a genuine commitment to the court's earlier mandate.
