Google integrates Gemini into software engineering hiring

Candidates vying for software engineering roles at Google are now navigating a hiring process transformed by artificial intelligence. Internal documents reveal that the company has moved beyond traditional coding assessments, testing new interview formats that require applicants to demonstrate proficiency in prompt engineering and collaborative AI tool usage.

The shift reflects a broader mandate at Google, where three-quarters of new code is currently generated by AI. To mirror this internal reality, the company now requires AI fluency as a standard qualification for software engineering positions. During these updated interviews, candidates are permitted to use Gemini as an assistant, while interviewers are beginning to leverage the tool to generate role-tailored feedback and transcribe sessions via Google Meet.

While these changes have expanded across the company throughout the year, Google maintains that the programs remain in a pilot phase. Brian Ong, vice president of recruiting, confirmed that the company is evolving its evaluation methods to better align with modern development workflows. Despite the push for AI integration, Google has issued strict internal warnings, prohibiting employees from deploying their own generative AI agents or standalone models to conduct or solve hiring tasks.
