Zelensky Presses EU for Urgent Defence Funding and Sharper Sanctions

Standing before European leaders in Brussels, President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a stark call for unity, demanding increased financial support and intensified pressure on Moscow. His visit comes as Western cohesion faces new strain following a controversial US deal to permit the flow of Russian diesel into global energy markets.

The Ukrainian leader emphasized that ending the conflict requires more than diplomatic rhetoric, pointing to the immediate need for enhanced military aid. While officials in Brussels prepare to signal their disapproval of the Trump-Putin diesel agreement in upcoming summit conclusions, the political fallout remains palpable. Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten described the move as a setback, urging Europe to demonstrate its independence while simultaneously calling on the US to provide the intelligence and hardware necessary to repel ongoing Russian offensives.

Financial instability looms as a secondary, yet critical, front. While Europe has committed to a 90-billion-euro loan package, analysts note a persistent 23-billion-euro shortfall expected as winter approaches. Tetiana Shevchuk of the Anti-Corruption Action Center warned that the current financing structure leaves a precarious gap in 2027. Although Zelensky has proposed accelerating the disbursement of loan tranches to bolster the Ukrainian defence ministry, Brussels remains hesitant, fearing such an advance could jeopardize the long-term sustainability of the aid package.
