Bending Spoons slashes Airtable workforce after billion-dollar buyout

Months after finalizing a $1.28 billion acquisition of database platform Airtable, Italian tech conglomerate Bending Spoons has initiated a significant round of layoffs. The move marks a sharp pivot in corporate strategy, as the new owners aim to dismantle existing structures in favor of leaner, AI-focused development teams.

Federico Simionato, product leader at Bending Spoons, justified the decision by citing a preference for smaller, faster-moving units, claiming these groups produce higher-quality software. While the exact number of affected employees remains undisclosed, Alessandro Savarese, Airtable’s product lead, confirmed that staff departures will conclude by the end of the week. Those exiting the company are slated to receive substantial separation packages.

The restructuring shifts Airtable’s primary focus toward core platform stability and the integration of new AI features. Despite the sudden reduction in staff, the company maintains that the layoffs do not reflect individual performance. External recruiters have already begun signaling interest in the displaced talent, with X engineer Mridul Singhai publicly inviting the departing employees to apply for roles at his organization.
