From Construction to Six Figures: A Career Pivot into Tech Sales

Bryan Ruiz spent years in the grueling, hourly-wage world of construction before realizing that his physical labor would never yield the financial growth he craved. The 27-year-old Sioux Falls resident eventually traded his hard hat for a laptop, successfully transitioning into a lucrative career in tech sales.

The shift required more than just desire. While earning $18 an hour, Ruiz spent his off-hours consuming podcasts like "30 Minutes to President's Club" and completing a $500 CourseCareers program to gain a structured understanding of the industry. His initial job hunt was difficult; a disastrous first interview left him doubting his decision, but his persistence paid off when a third hiring manager valued his proactive outreach.

He argues that construction experience provided an unexpected foundation for his new role. The social awareness required to coordinate with plumbers and electricians, combined with a high tolerance for long hours, proved attractive to sales managers. Although his first year in sales saw his income dip to $30,000—down from the $50,000 he earned in construction—his trajectory shifted rapidly. Now at a SaaS company, he is on track to earn six figures. Beyond the salary, the transition replaced the daily commute to job sites with a flexible, remote schedule that allows him to manage personal responsibilities. Ruiz suggests that for those looking to follow his path, the key lies in demonstrating capability rather than relying solely on a résumé.
