FTSE 100 Gains on Bank Rally Ahead of Economic Data

Financial stocks steered the FTSE 100 higher on Thursday, as investors braced for critical US inflation reports and UK GDP figures. The blue-chip index climbed 0.58% to 10,614.30 points by mid-morning, with the midcap FTSE 250 tracking a more modest gain of 0.21% in a cautious market environment.

FTSE 100 Gains on Bank Rally Ahead of Economic Data

Banking heavyweights led the upward momentum, with HSBC Holdings, Standard Life, Lloyds Banking Group, Barclays, NatWest, and Standard Chartered recording gains between 1.2% and 1.9%. The sector's resilience comes as Bloomberg reported HSBC is pivoting toward performance-based compensation structures. Conversely, the rally faced headwinds from individual corporate laggards; exhibitions group Informa slid 3%, while Vodafone shares retreated 1.4%. The recruiter Hays suffered a sharper 6.7% decline, hitting its lowest valuation since August 6 following a fourteenth consecutive drop in net fees.

Market focus remains locked on upcoming economic indicators. Traders are monitoring US inflation data to gauge the Federal Reserve’s future policy path, alongside UK GDP estimates for August. Additionally, investors are parsing comments from Bank of England Deputy Governor Sarah Breeden for signals regarding the trajectory of interest rates. Amid the broader market shifts, GlobalData rose 3.9% following reports that CEO Mike Danson is weighing the sale of core business divisions.
