Europe's Abortion Access Stalls Amid Conservative Pushback

Despite a long-standing reputation as a global leader in reproductive rights, Europe is witnessing a sharp regression. New data from the Centre for Reproductive Rights reveals that while legal frameworks once trended toward liberalization, a resurgence of conservative resistance is now actively dismantling established access to safe abortion care.

Europe's Abortion Access Stalls Amid Conservative Pushback

The report, released on 28 September, highlights a growing gap between progressive legislation and the practical reality of care. Even with the legal adoption of the ‘My Voice, My Choice’ initiative last February, which permits EU funds to support regional abortion programmes and cross-border travel for care, the policy remains dormant. No member state has yet utilized these financial mechanisms to assist those living in regions where services are restricted or unavailable.

This inertia reflects a broader political shift where governments increasingly implement systemic barriers rather than expanding healthcare access. The failure to deploy available European funding underscores how local political opposition effectively nullifies continental mandates, leaving many Europeans without the reproductive support they were promised.
