German security services believe these individuals were part of a broader structure organized by Russian military intelligence that leveraged Slovak territory as a primary logistics base.
The same network orchestrated a failed plot against the Skyeton drone factory near Prešov, which supplies reconnaissance technology to Ukraine. Slovak authorities intervened to prevent the attack, resulting in the detention of several suspects, including Latvian and Ukrainian citizens. Investigators also linked the group to an August 4 drone incident at Leipzig-Halle Airport, where an explosive device was aimed at a Ukrainian cargo aircraft.
Russian intelligence operations currently prioritize operational distance, frequently employing decentralized recruitment via Telegram and cryptocurrency payments. By utilizing intermediaries, GRU officers maintain layers of separation between themselves and the individuals executing the attacks. This strategy allows the agency to deploy operatives who often remain unaware of their true handlers, complicating efforts to trace the chain of command back to Moscow.
