From Odd Jobs to Alps: How One Influencer Built a Career on Travel

After graduating from the University of Birmingham in 2022, Rhiannon Wood traded a traditional journalism career for the uncertainty of the creator economy. Today, the 26-year-old manages a 60,000-follower Instagram presence and leads group expeditions through Greece, Peru, and Georgia, funding her lifestyle through brand partnerships and tour commissions.

Wood’s transition began in Canada, where she spent months working minimum-wage roles at ski resorts and canoe rental companies. Realizing that low-pay labor was unsustainable, she pivoted to professionalizing her social media presence in late 2024. By hiring an Instagram coach and studying algorithmic trends, she secured her first paid partnership with outdoor provider Mapo Tapo, earning $446 to host a trip in Switzerland.

Her business model relies on a combination of sponsored content and tour leadership. While commission rates fluctuate based on tour size and agency agreements, she has earned as much as $3,000 per trip. Despite the freedom of global travel, the work is constant. Wood manages every aspect of her brand—negotiating contracts, planning logistics, and maintaining engagement—without an agent. Though she currently earns in the low five figures, she is now moving toward launching an independent travel agency, aiming to capitalize on her growing audience.
