Oprah Winfrey on the heavy cost of people-pleasing

“You always have the right to change your mind,” Oprah Winfrey admitted on The Mel Robbins Podcast, reflecting on her decision to launch the Oprah Winfrey Network while still hosting her iconic talk show. She now recognizes that the venture, which struggled for years, was fueled by an inability to disappoint others.

Oprah Winfrey on the heavy cost of people-pleasing

The launch of OWN in January 2011 occurred just months before the conclusion of her 25-year run on daytime television. The network faced immediate hurdles, leading to a period Winfrey describes as one of the worst in her life. By March 2012, the network was forced to implement significant layoffs, and the public scrutiny surrounding its low ratings took a heavy personal toll. Winfrey recalls waking up at night unable to breathe, plagued by a persistent internal voice that told her the path was wrong, yet she felt shackled by her signed agreements.

She likens the experience to the realization that a wedding should be called off even after the invitations have been sent. Her desire to avoid conflict with business partners overrode her intuition. This reflection echoes her 2024 conversation with Al Roker, where she identified the attempt to build a network while simultaneously ending her show as her primary professional regret. The joint venture with Discovery eventually shifted ownership, with Discovery acquiring a 95% stake by 2020 as Harpo transitioned its interests into company shares.
