Environmental groups challenge EU water policy shift

Five environmental organizations petitioned the European Ombudsman on Tuesday, alleging that the European Union’s recent decision to weaken water protection standards stems from undue influence by the mining industry. The complaint centers on a lack of transparency and the absence of formal impact assessments during the regulatory review process.

The dispute targets a directive revision aimed at removing bottlenecks for critical raw materials. Although specific carve-outs remain unconfirmed, the European Commission introduced increased flexibility in May regarding pollution limits for lakes and rivers. Activists argue these changes bypass established environmental safeguards without public consultation or scientific scrutiny.

Irene Duque Femenía of Wetlands International Europe characterized the move as a sudden policy pivot that materialized without warning. By failing to conduct a public impact study, the EU has sparked concerns regarding the long-term integrity of water quality regulations across member states.
