Why leadership fails when conflict goes unaddressed

Conflict is inevitable, yet even the highest-ranking executives frequently avoid the difficult conversations necessary for a healthy workplace. Lauren Bronson Petrous, a former senior consultant at Accenture, argues that companies often promote high-performing specialists into leadership roles without ever equipping them with the tools required to manage interpersonal tension.

Why leadership fails when conflict goes unaddressed

During her tenure at the consulting giant, Petrous observed a recurring pattern: senior leaders managing multimillion-dollar contracts were often unable to address the fundamental issues stalling their teams. Some avoided the elephant in the room entirely, while others lacked the nuance required to deliver feedback effectively. This disconnect stems from a corporate tendency to prioritize technical talent over the soft skills required to develop teams and navigate friction.

Petrous left Accenture in December 2023 to launch Boundless & Co., an advisory firm focused on organizational health. She now spends much of her time mediating disputes between co-founders who risk dismantling their own companies simply because they cannot agree on a path forward. According to Petrous, true resolution does not require consensus or friendship; it requires the ability to walk away from a disagreement with enough clarity to continue working toward a shared goal.
