EU budget talks stall as negotiators clash over spending paradox

Siegfried Mureşan, one of the European Parliament’s lead negotiators, criticized the hypocrisy of countries advocating for enhanced competitiveness and security while seeking to slash hundreds of billions from the total budget. While Mureşan stopped short of naming specific governments, his remarks target the so-called ‘frugal’ bloc—including Germany, the Netherlands, and several Nordic states—which remains at odds with the ‘friends of cohesion.’

This latter group, led by Italy and Spain, is fighting to shield agricultural subsidies and regional development funds from the proposed austerity measures. Mureşan insists that the budget framework put forward by the Cypriot presidency in June represents the only viable path forward, arguing that further tampering with the total volume will only deepen the current legislative stalemate.
