Nokia Returns to Euro Stoxx 50 as Volkswagen Exits

A year after falling out of favor, Nokia Oyj is set to rejoin the Euro Stoxx 50 index following a strategic pivot toward fiber-optic infrastructure for AI data centers. The shift, announced by index provider Stoxx, marks a reversal for the Finnish firm while signaling deeper trouble for German manufacturing giant Volkswagen.

Volkswagen will be removed from the benchmark as its shares have tumbled nearly 27% this year, hampered by stiff competition from Chinese automakers and ongoing internal restructuring. The index provider also confirmed that French utility Engie will join the index, while Dutch information-services group Wolters Kluwer is slated for removal. These adjustments, which take effect September 21, reflect a broader recalibration of European market leadership.

Stoxx also finalized changes to the wider Stoxx 600 Index, notably adding the National Bank of Greece and Alpha Bank. This inclusion follows the reclassification of Greek equities to developed market status earlier this year. Conversely, British retailer JD Sports Fashion, Swedish outdoor gear maker Thule Group, and German airport operator Fraport AG will exit the Stoxx 600, highlighting the shifting fortunes of mid-cap firms across the continent.
