Why a Meta product leader walked away from a $250,000 salary

Jason Shen was managing teams and navigating corporate restructures at Meta when he realized his true skill set—mentoring and conflict resolution—accounted for only 10% of his performance reviews. In 2023, he walked away from a high-six-figure compensation package to launch an executive coaching practice on his own terms.

Why a Meta product leader walked away from a $250,000 salary

The Brooklyn-based founder, who previously sold his startup Midgame to Meta in 2020, spent three years as a product leader before deciding the corporate grind was unsustainable. While his role offered a target cash compensation of $250,000 and significant equity, the constant cycle of reorganization and document reviews left him feeling disconnected from his work. By leaving, Shen bypassed approximately $1.68 million in potential unvested stock options, choosing instead to invest $150,000 of his personal savings into his new venture, Refactor Labs.

Transitioning to full-time coaching allowed Shen to reclaim his schedule and focus on tangible impact. He now works roughly 20 hours a week, generating $369,000 in annual revenue while prioritizing his family and creative projects, such as his upcoming book, Deep Ambition. Although he acknowledges the financial security of Big Tech, he argues that the autonomy and reduced stress of his current life outweigh the deferred millions. For Shen, the shift is not just about income—it is about moving away from abstract corporate metrics toward the direct, observable growth of the founders he advises.
