Ice cream makers pivot to wellness as GLP-1 users cut consumption

As appetite-suppressing drugs like GLP-1 gain traction, the ice cream industry is facing a sharp shift in consumer behavior. With U.S. sales volumes dipping 1.5% through mid-June, manufacturers are scrambling to rebrand indulgence by shrinking portions and emphasizing cleaner, protein-rich ingredients to keep shoppers from walking away.

The rise of GLP-1 medications is reshaping the frozen dessert aisle, with research from Boston Consulting Group indicating that users of these drugs have cut their ice cream intake by at least 10%. With roughly 16 million Americans currently on these treatments—a figure projected to grow through the decade—major food companies are under pressure to rethink their recipes. Brands like Magnum and Blue Bunny are leading the charge, reformulating products to exclude high-fructose corn syrup and artificial additives while prioritizing higher protein content and controlled calorie counts.

Despite the health-conscious pivot, executives maintain that flavor remains the primary hurdle. Ferrero’s Halo Top, which markets itself on lower calorie counts without drastically reducing serving sizes, has seen double-digit growth over the last two years. Similarly, the Magnum Ice Cream Company is leaning into its wellness-oriented lines, such as Yasso and Breyers CarbSmart, to capture a segment of the market that demands nutritional benefits without sacrificing the experience of a treat. European producers are also observing this trend, noting that while consumers are interested in healthier options, they remain uncompromising on the quality of their occasional indulgence.
