Retail investors retreat from SpaceX after weeks of buying

Retail traders shifted to net sellers of SpaceX stock on August 7, offloading $4.5 million in shares. This reversal marks the first instance of net selling since the company’s June debut, breaking a streak of persistent buying that defined the rocket manufacturer’s initial months on the public market.

The pivot suggests a strategic recalibration rather than a panicked exit. According to Vanda Research, this outflow remains modest compared to the $144.6 million in net buying recorded on June 16. Market analyst Sam North of eToro noted that investors appear to be using a recent price rebound to secure profits, citing position fatigue and a reassessment of risk rather than a single negative catalyst.

SpaceX shares have faced significant pressure, closing below their $135 IPO price every day since July 16. The stock previously surged 67% before sliding more than 22% below its debut valuation in August. Investor anxiety intensified following the company's first quarterly earnings report, which raised questions about the sustainability of funding AI investments through the profitable Starlink division. Liquidity has also increased, as the volume of shares available for trading doubled following the expiration of initial lockup restrictions last week.
