SpaceX pivots to human-led sales for Starlink expansion

While Elon Musk champions AI at xAI, he is betting on a traditional enterprise sales force to scale Starlink. During Tuesday’s earnings call, the SpaceX CEO emphasized that securing large-scale corporate and government contracts for the satellite network requires personal accountability and direct engagement that algorithms cannot replicate.

Musk’s strategy acknowledges that high-stakes deals depend on building trust, a sentiment echoed by industry experts. Brian Smith of IA Business Advisors noted that even tech giants are fundamentally selling relationships rather than just hardware. While AI tools currently handle tasks like customer research and script drafting, the consensus among recruiters and consultants is that the final stage of closing a complex deal remains a uniquely human endeavor.

This approach contrasts sharply with Palantir’s recent strategy. CEO Alex Karp stated that his firm is successfully growing its commercial business with a shrinking sales headcount, defying conventional industry growth models. However, experts like Alan Stein and Alex Sobol argue that Palantir’s shift reflects a specific corporate philosophy rather than a broad trend toward AI-driven sales. As SpaceX positions Starlink as a primary internet provider for major clients, the company is prioritizing boots-on-the-ground advocacy to convert skeptics and manage the complexities of a product portfolio that Musk admits is increasingly intricate.
