Chime Trims Workforce by 10% as AI Reshapes Fintech Operations

Fintech company Chime is cutting 10% of its workforce, affecting approximately 150 employees, as the firm pivots toward an AI-driven organizational structure. CEO Chris Britt cited the need for smaller, faster teams and increased operational discipline, joining a broader industry trend of thinning ranks to boost productivity.

The layoffs follow a significant shift in corporate strategy across the financial sector, where firms are banking on technology to streamline workflows. Britt noted in an internal memo that while AI expands operational possibilities, it demands new skill sets and a flatter hierarchy. By removing management layers, the company aims to accelerate growth following its public offering in June 2025.

Chime’s decision mirrors moves by other major financial players, including Block, Visa, and Mastercard, all of which have recently initiated job cuts to integrate AI and enhance efficiency. Chime, which employed roughly 1,500 people at the end of last year, currently faces pressure to improve profitability as it prepares to report second-quarter results next week. The company’s shares have seen a 10% decline so far this year, reflecting the volatility facing digital-first lenders competing against traditional banking giants.
