A six-year career break in semiconductors

After moving to Canada in 2018, Ramya Ramesh spent six years away from her semiconductor engineering career to prioritize family and navigate pandemic-era hurdles. When she finally looked to re-enter the workforce in 2024, she found that a specialized corporate returner program turned her long absence from a liability into a manageable transition.

A six-year career break in semiconductors

The New Jersey-based engineer originally left her position at GlobalFoundries to support her husband’s international assignment. What was intended to be a one-year relocation stretched into nearly five years due to COVID-19 and personal milestones. During this time, Ramesh faced significant barriers, including language requirements in Montreal and the logistical challenges of raising two young children without local support. By the time she returned to the United States in 2023, she feared her technical skills were obsolete.

Her path back began when former colleagues encouraged her to apply for an opening in her previous department. During the interview, Ramesh focused on her transferable problem-solving skills rather than her time away. Upon rejoining GlobalFoundries in October 2024, she utilized the firm’s structured re-entry program, which provided mentors and resources to help bridge the gap. This institutional support system, paired with her niche expertise, allowed her to bypass the typical barriers faced by those returning after an extended hiatus. Today, Ramesh notes that the proactive communication skills she developed while living abroad have made her more effective and visible within her team than she was prior to her break.
