Europe faces 57% surge in wildfire destruction

The crisis reached a breaking point this July. In south-west France, the death toll has climbed to 13, forcing the evacuation of over 300,000 residents. EU officials report that 42,000 hectares of French territory are currently burning, while central Spain battles 80,000 hectares of out-of-control blazes. Both nations have seen fire activity more than double during the first seven months of 2026 alone.

To combat the escalation, the EU Civil Protection Mechanism is coordinating a cross-border response. By Monday, seven planes and four helicopters were deployed to assist French fire crews, while six additional planes and three specialized ground teams were dispatched to Spain. Commission spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen noted that individual nations no longer possess the solitary capacity to manage disasters of this magnitude, underscoring the necessity of a collective regional defense.
