Alphabet expands workforce by 12,000 despite AI-driven cost scrutiny

While industry peers aggressively shed staff to fund their pivot toward artificial intelligence, Alphabet has quietly moved in the opposite direction. The parent company of Google added 11,830 employees over the past year, growing its total headcount to 198,933 by the end of June 2026.

This expansion appears at odds with the broader tech sector, where Meta, Amazon, and Microsoft have slashed thousands of roles since 2022. Google itself initiated a major reduction of 12,000 staff members in 2023, followed by subsequent smaller cuts that have left the workforce on edge. Last week, roughly 4,500 employees signed a petition addressed to CEO Sundar Pichai, demanding clearer protections against further instability.

Despite the internal friction, Alphabet’s financial performance remains robust, with second-quarter revenue jumping 24% to $119.8 billion. The company is leaning heavily into its infrastructure requirements, raising its 2026 capital expenditure outlook to a range between $195 billion and $205 billion. Management maintains that demand for AI capacity is currently outstripping supply, justifying the surge in hiring and spending even as employees push back against the climate of uncertainty.
