Staley, who led the British lender from 2015 until his 2021 resignation, remains under intense scrutiny regarding the nature of his association with Epstein. His departure from Barclays followed a regulatory dispute concerning his characterization of that friendship. In June 2025, Staley failed to overturn an industry ban imposed by the Financial Conduct Authority, which determined he had misled regulators about the depth of his connection to the financier. Evidence cited in that case included over 1,000 emails where Staley described their bond as "profound."
Beyond the congressional inquiry, Staley faces a civil lawsuit in Los Angeles alleging he and Barclays defrauded shareholders by concealing the true nature of his ties to Epstein. These legal challenges follow his tenure at JPMorgan Chase, where he managed the private bank while Epstein was a client. While JPMorgan settled a lawsuit with the U.S. Virgin Islands regarding its handling of Epstein, the bank subsequently pursued its own legal action against Staley, eventually reaching a confidential settlement. Staley maintains he was unaware of Epstein’s criminal activities.
