The competitive landscape has grown increasingly lopsided, particularly when measured against Coca-Cola. While PepsiCo’s North American beverage volume dropped 4% in the latest quarter, Coca-Cola has seen steady growth, resulting in a 20% stock surge for the rival this year compared to a 4% decline for PepsiCo. This performance gap is intensifying pressure from activist investor Elliott Investment Management, which holds a $4 billion stake and has long advocated for structural changes, including the potential divestiture of non-core food assets.

Market experts suggest the core issue is no longer just affordability, but relevance. As consumers move away from habitual snacking toward intentional choices—favoring high-protein, low-sugar options—PepsiCo’s reliance on its legacy snack brands, which generate 58% of annual revenue, has become a liability. Analysts warn that the company’s "giant in the room" mentality is hindering its ability to innovate at the speed required by modern trends, leaving it vulnerable to competitors that are better positioned to capture the demand for functional, health-oriented foods.
