German state aid flows to Tesla despite Musk’s anti-EU rhetoric

While Elon Musk openly rails against the European Union, labeling its institutions a "Fourth Reich," his company continues to benefit from significant German public funding. Internal documents reveal that Berlin funneled €860 million to Tesla buyers to meet EU pandemic recovery targets, alongside fresh aid for his Brandenburg factory.

Between 2020 and 2023, Germany utilized an electric vehicle subsidy program to satisfy green mandates tied to its post-pandemic recovery package. By incentivizing Tesla purchases, the federal government effectively unlocked EU refinancing funds, linking the manufacturer to the success of its recovery efforts. This financial support persists even as Musk actively courts political figures who mirror his hostility toward European integration.

Following his recent disparagement of the bloc, the state of Brandenburg authorized the first of three €24 million installments for Tesla’s battery facility near Grünheide. This aid, approved under a European Commission framework designed to address economic crises, adds to the hundreds of millions in indirect support already processed. While Musk previously claimed that all industrial subsidies should be eliminated, the flexibility of German and American tax incentives continues to prove highly attractive for his operations.
