US Lawmakers Press Von der Leyen to Defend EU Methane Standards

A coalition of US representatives has urged European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to resist pressure from oil and gas lobbyists seeking to gut methane import regulations. The lawmakers argue that upholding these standards is vital for climate goals and energy security, directly challenging recent attempts to stall implementation.

The letter, spearheaded by Democratic Congressman Sean Casten, arrives as the European Commission faces mounting friction from 12 member states—led by the Czech Republic, Italy, and the Netherlands—who recently demanded a three-year suspension of the rules. These nations cite potential supply risks and legal ambiguities, a narrative the US group rejects by pointing to Rystad Energy research. That analysis indicates that gas supplies meeting EU criteria could triple demand by next year, effectively debunking claims that the regulation threatens market stability.

During a mid-June delegation to Brussels and Strasbourg, the US representatives met with key EU figures, including Roberta Metsola and Wopke Hoekstra. These discussions framed the methane legislation as a litmus test for Europe’s capacity to maintain climate policy integrity against aggressive commercial lobbying. With further congressional support expected, the push signals a high-stakes standoff between environmental mandates and the interests of the energy sector.
